Clothing Ideas For Family Reunion Photographic Portraiture:
FOR WOMEN, we suggest blouses and/or sweaters with skirts (denim is not recommended – it tends to be too stiff for sitting properly), slacks or jeans. Feminine v-neck clothing is the most flattering. Avoid sleeveless outfits. Skirts/dresses should be long enough to cover the knees.
FOR MEN, for a formal sitting, we suggest a suit/sports jacket/sweater and a shirt and tie with coordinating pants. Select an off-white or colored shirt with cuff links and a dark suit/sports jacket. A tie with tiny color-coordinating accents photographs well. A casual outfit may be a shirt/sweater with jeans/chinos/khakis. Shave prior to the sitting to avoid “five o’clock shadow.”
FOR GROUPS, colors should be coordinated in similar or complimentary shades. An attractive effect can be achieved by having most of the group in one color. Since we want to keep the focus on the family, please do not choose any more than two colors. When choosing clothing, be sure to try on the outfits ahead of time and look at everyone in a sitting and standing position. Follow the suggestions above, and if a casual setting is desired, jeans/chinos/khakis and sweaters or jerseys are a good choice.
WE SUGGEST bringing several changes. Classic traditional clothes give the portrait a timeless look. Avoid fad fashions as they will make your portrait look dated.
Hair And Make Up
FLYAWAY HAIR can be tamed by lightly touching the ends with a soft tissue sprayed with hair spray. Avoid heavy make up, but do accent cheeks and lips with deeper colors. Corrective makeup prudently applied to cover dark circles, broken capillaries and blemishes will prevent extensive photo retouching.
Color
CHOOSE SOLID-COLOR CLOTHING – no large plaids, checks, stripes or loud colors. Dark colors make you appear thinner, light colors make you look heavier. Dark colors on children make them look older. The color should be complimentary to your skin tone; what is closest to your face reflects into your skin. The right colors can add highlight and vitality. The wrong colors will make your skin look dull and bring out lines in your face. Medium tone colors will enhance your portrait.
Glasses
Thick lenses cause refraction; tinted glass will photograph darker than clear glass. These challenges cannot be overcome with retouching. If possible, wear frames without glass.
Personalize your sitting with anything that is special to you
Hobbies - Props - Motorcycles - Cars - Friends - Hats - Sports - Pets - Glamour - Soft focus location - Natural light - Dance
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but our experience indicates that if you follow these suggestions, you will get the best portrait.

A FAMILY
© Rachel G. Michael
A warm welcome
A how do you do
Words of kindness
And comfort too
A perfect little unit
So happy all in place
Old photographs
Show each loving face
Family dinners
Discussions of your day
Saying you need not be thinner
Making that frown go away
Before going to bed
A goodnight is always said
A family we'll be
A family, you'll see
